Martha Stewart says ’70 is the new 50,’ she’ll try Match.com to find Mr. Right

Martha Stewart

No matter what you think of Martha Stewart, it’s difficult to deny that she looks absolutely amazing at 71 years old, and this cover of New You magazine shows Martha looking rather beautiful. I know that most people don’t really like Martha, and she’s supposedly a terrible person to work for and carries the ice-queen reputation to the limit, but she dominates the aspirational lifestyle business like no other. Forget Goop and Jessica Alba — Martha Stewart has been suggesting ridiculous methods to the peasants for decades, and the tips work if you’re willing to carve out silly little swans from chocolate or whatever. I never have the patience for that sort of stuff, so I’m not exactly in the average lifestyle guru’s demo.

Regardless of Martha’s tips not being my thing, I still respect her in a strange way. Like, when she was convicted of insider trading in 2004, she didn’t pull a Lohan and ask for probation and then whine and drag her heels in with repeat offenses over several years. Nope. Martha went in and did her time (albeit in a minimum security facility) and afterwards, she picked up the pieces of her business. Now Martha is back and more successful than ever, and she’s promoting her latest book, Living the Good Long Life: A Practical Guide to Caring for Yourself and Others, which broaches the topic of aging in today’s society. Here are some excerpts from her New You interview:

On aging: “Seventy is nothing like the 70 of 20 or 40 years ago. 70 is the new 50! Not everyone wants to retire, and very few people want to slow down.”

Stages of life: “It’s imperative to have a good diet that keeps you healthy. Maintaining a tiny waist is a very important factor in successful aging. In your forties, you should start thinking about the rest of your life. By your fifties, you should have a good doctor and wellness routine set up.”

Her top beauty secret: “Unlimited amounts of very good moisturizer, with sunblock.”

On setbacks: “I’ve had my share of curveballs. Rebuilding is a lot harder than building. I’ve learned that. You have to approach something new as a build-on to what you’ve already done.”

On second chances: “There is only one time around the track. And you are on that track the minute you’re born.”

Her one regret: “Just that I haven’t had more children. But my daughter has two babies now, so the family is growing.”

Yesterday, Martha also sat down with Matt Lauer on “Today,” and Lauer decided to ask about her love life. In response, Martha answered, “I haven’t found the next Mr Right. I’d like to have breakfast with somebody. I’d like to go to bed with somebody. Sleep with somebody. I’m always looking. Are you kidding? All women are always looking.” At Matt’s suggestion, Martha then agreed to join Match.com but says she’ll use an alias on the well-known dating site. Seriously? She’s going to get some crazies (and I would know — I went on a date with a guy from Match and soon learned that he was also seeking a Russian bride) on on that site, and once one person figures out Martha’s alias, he will definitely spread the word. Poor Martha hasn’t ever had much luck in the romance department, and I seem to recall that her first book, Entertaining, was released on the same date that her first husband filed for divorce. That’s gotta leave some scars.
