Lindsay Lohan's ProActiv Commercial

I can't believe Lindsay accepted an endorsement gig as a ProActiv spokesperson. Diddy and Jessica Simpson did it, but it seemed like a rumor when I first heard about it.

A few years ago I actually used ProActiv. It's a bit drying, but I have to admit that it worked on my skin, which only occasionally broke out beforehand but was really clear when I was using it. OMG - please send me some cash ProActiv, because I just plugged your stupid skincare system.

Thanks to Faded Youth for finding this video.

Ashley Judd reveals her lousy treatment for depression

In this month's issue of Glamour, Ashley Judd did her duty as a B-list celebrity and revealed potentially embarassing details about her personal life. She said that she underwent in-patient treatment for depression after succumbing to pressure from employees at the facility that was treating her sister, country star Winona Judd, for a food addiction:

Ashley Judd says she spent 47 days in a Texas treatment facility for depression and other emotional problems, in an interview in Glamour magazine.

"I needed help," the 38-year-old actress tells the magazine in its August issue. "I was in so much pain."

Judd, the daughter of country music star Naomi Judd, says she entered the Shades of Hope Treatment Center in Buffalo Gap in February for "codependence in my relationships; depression, blaming, raging, numbing, denying and minimizing my feelings."

"But because my addictions were behavioral, not chemical, I wouldn't have known to seek treatment. At Shades of Hope, my behaviors were treated like addictions. And those behaviors were killing me spiritually, the same as someone who is sitting on a corner with a bottle in a brown paper bag."

Judd says she was visiting her sister, singer Wynonna Judd, who was being treated for food addictions.

"When (the counselors) approached me about treatment, they said, `No one ever does an intervention on people like you. You look too good; you're too smart and together. But you (and Wynonna) come from the same family so you come from the same wound.' No one had ever validated my pain before. It was so profound," she says.

We all have issues that could benefit from therapy, and I enjoyed nice outpatient visits with a kind woman who usually took my side when I told stories about my lousy ex-boyfriend. It sounds like Judd was brainwashed, though. Listen to how she explains "therapy:"
"My behaviors were treated like addictions. And those behaviors were killing me spiritually, the same as someone who is sitting on a corner with a bottle in a brown paper bag."

This sounds like a bullshit, oversimplified way to view one's issues. There are lots of different schools of thought and accompanying therapies that can be effective, but treating everything like an addiction is not something I learned about in grad school. It's based on the Alcoholics Anonymous model of dependency, which may be a semi-effective, albeit controversial, way to treat addictions, but is not a really constructive way to work through one's emotional issues.

If it worked for Judd that's great, but treating one's emotional problems under the umbrella of addiction can be woefully inadequate and ineffective.

I attended a few years of graduate school for psychology before ending up in IT just before the Internet boom, so I sort of know what I'm talking about. My preferred form of therapy is cognitive behavioral, which helps change your outlook by systematically changing your behaviors. The most famous cognitive therapist is Albert Ellis, and the most practical book I've read on the subject is "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" by David Burns, which I would highly recommend if you're a bit depressed or having trouble getting out of a slump. (If you're depressed, get help from a therapist and/or go on medication. There's no shame in it.)

It sounds like Ashley Judd got convinced by the staff at her sister's facility that it would be great if she checked in. They probably realized how good it would be for their PR if they were able to "treat" two of the sort-of-famous Judd sisters.

Here is Ashley Judd at a Cartier party in early June with Selma Hayek, and at the Indianapolis 500 celebration in late May with her husband, Scottish racecar driver Dario Franchitti. Judd, 38, has been married to Franchitti, 33, since 1999. The couple divides their time between Tennessee and Scotland.

Hilary Swank says her ex, Chad Lowe, is an addict!

It looks like Vanity Fair's strategy of denying stars the cover unless they dish lots of dirt has worked, because Hilary Swank blabs in an upcoming interview with the magazine that her ex, Chad Lowe, is an addict! She says he's been sober for three years, but that his battle with substance abuse caused a serious rift in the relationship that they couldn't repair.

The beautiful tomboy tells Vanity Fair she was shocked to learn about Lowe's addiction problem.

"I knew something was happening but I didn't know what" Swank tells Vanity Fair in the August editions set to hit newsstands today.

"When I found out, it was such a shock because I never thought he'd keep something from me. And yet, on another level, it was a confirmation of something I was feeling that was keeping us from being completely solid.

"He's sober now. I don't want to make it seem like that's the sole reason; there were other factors. But that just kind of blew it open. It made me look at things a lot deeper. That's when you realize it's not going to work."

Lowe, 38, and his managers could not be immediately reached for comment yesterday.

Although Lowe's struggle touched off their marriage's downhill slide, Swank said she's proud of her soon-to-be ex's three years of sobriety.

Vanity Fair does not detail the actor's substance of choice.

"It's an enormous obstacle to overcome, and he's doing it. He's living a sober life," said Swank, who married Lowe in 1997. "I know how difficult it is, and I'm really proud of his sobriety."

The actress says she had to stay with Lowe when his substance abuse came to light.

"When I found out, I wanted to be there," she explains. "I knew it was the most important time of his life. That's when he needed me most."

It sounds like once Chad beat whatever drugs he was on things were never the same between them and it was impossible to overcome.

This happened to a friend of mine who was with her husband for over ten years. He got addicted to Oxycontin for back pain and completely changed. He became uncommunicative and withdrawn. They had a big blowout and ended up getting divorced. He has a new girlfriend and is still addicted to painkillers.

For an actress with two Oscars Hilary Swank doesn't get a lot of attention in the press. This revelation will make people interested in her for a week or two. She's sporty, down to earth, and normal and people don't think that's particularly exciting. She should follow this up by going shopping on Rodeo Drive and having dinner at The Ivy with a hot new guy.

In the upcoming interview, Hilary addresses the problems between her high=profile Hollywood career and her soon-to-be ex-husband's lack of prospects, saying, "I think that any frustration for him stemmed from the lack of opportunities in his own career."

Swank, 32, says she's wary of the dating scene, "I thought of it - of that whole world - I can't imagine it! I can't imagine going out right now and trying to find someone else to be with."

Relationship guru John Gray recommends that men and women do the opposite of their natural instincts when trying to recover from a breakup. Women should start dating right away while men should take time to nurse their wounds instead of jumping into another relationship. Maybe Hilary should take a page from Charlie Sheen and start looking online.

Here is Hilary in new ads from Clavin Klein and at a party for the perfume giant Guerlain, which she also represents, on 6/14. [via]

Ashlee Simpson to represent... Victoria's Secret!

A little plastic surgery can go a long way. It turns out that it was a rumor that Ashlee Simpson was offered $4 million to pose for Playboy and turned it down. It's stranger than fiction, though, that Ashlee is going to be the new face of the Victoria's Secret "pink" line. She is also moving in with her boyfriend and guitarist for her band, Braxton Olita:

West Coast spies say she's selling her Encino home to move in with boyfriend Braxton Olita. (Young Braxton, who plays guitar in her shows, has also graduated from sleeping in the band tour bus to bedding down in Ashley's own private coach, I hear.)

She ought to be able to afford some flashy new digs. It will soon be announced that the 21-year-old will front the campaign for Victoria's Secret's new line, Pink. She beat out finalist Kelly Clarkson to become the face (and hips and legs and … well, everything else) of the new line of younger, "cuter" lingerie.

Finally, anyone with a ticket to her sold-out concert at the Borgata tonight is in for a special treat: Plans are afoot for her big sis, Jessica, to join her onstage for a "surprise" duet.

I could see her getting naked, but someone is paying her to model lingerie? That's too much. Everyone is saying that she's hot now that she looks just like Jessica, but she's still an ugly little girl to me.

Ashlee started her U.S. tour last month, and little girls in Chuck Taylors are eagerly awaiting her arrival in their city. She told concert-goers in Washington, DC that "It's OK not to be perfect":

"The biggest lesson I've learned this year is it's okay to not be perfect," Ashlee Simpson told a crush of young girls who came to see her at the Warner Theatre on Friday night.

Wait a minute -- is that an old speech left over from the great lip-syncing debacle of 2004? It's likely, since Ash's 2006 has been more about striving for bland cookie-cutter perfection than accepting perceived flaws -- as evidenced by her alleged nose job.

It might be ok not to be perfect, but she must have learned that lesson too late to take back her plastic surgery.

Here is Ashlee in July's Marie Claire and in Elle UK. [via]

Jay-Z says Cristal is racist and he's boycotting it

The hip-hop community has given Cristal champage tons of free publicity by consuming it by the case, mentioning it in songs, and opening their fridges on the MTV show "Cribs" to show chilled bottles. As a result, Cristal has become a household name:

Rapper Biggie Smalls (a.k.a. the Notorious B.I.G.), who was gunned down in 1997, is believed to have been the first performer to mention Cristal. He started off elegizing Moet & Chandon Champagne, then switched to "Cristal forever" on the song "Brooklyn's Finest" on Jay-Z's album "Reasonable Doubt." References to Cristal started popping up in the lyrics of Lil' Kim, Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, Jay-Z and 50 Cent. The latter has apparently launched what sounds like an inner-city sampling campaign with his hit song "Rotten Apple," in which he's "teachin' the hoodrats what Cristal taste like."

Jay-Z, who opened 40/40 last year, proposes trading his Cristal for extreme intimacy with a young woman in the video, "I Just Wanna Love You" -- the camera zooms in on a designer refrigerator full of the bubbly. In another video, "Big Pimpin'," he brandishes his drink on a yacht -- just the kind of "livin' large atmospherics" that brand managers love. (In fact, so many rap videos feature Cristal that Dr. Evil, the archrival of Austin Powers, both played by Mike Myers, did a hilarious parody of them in the movie "Austin Powers in Goldmember.")

Critics charge that whatever the image benefits -- rappers have given Cristal street credibility (and sales) that advertising could never buy...

Cristal is made by Champagne producer Louis Roederer from the best grapes from 500 acres of vineyards in northern France, and is aged in oak for five years. Even in a good year, only 65,000 six-bottle cases are made; in bad years, it's not produced at all. That happened three times during the 1990s.

That scarcity is a source of consternation for hip-hop stars who like to take Cristal along when they travel. P. Diddy spent $80,000 on four methuselahs (the equivalent of eight 750-ml bottles) of Cristal while chillin' in St. Tropez, according to the British newspaper the Observer, and for his 29th birthday at New York's Cipriani restaurant, he set up six free-flowing Champagne bars -- the tab was $500,000. Jay-Z even takes Cristal onstage.

Such antics have an impact. New York-based Scarborough Research found that people who have attended a hip-hop concert are 77 percent more likely than the general public to buy Champagne. And a recent study by New Media Strategies, a research company in Washington, D.C., showed that 60 percent of consumers who consider themselves hip-hop fans are likely to buy products mentioned by rappers.

The managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud, expressed misgivings about rappers endorsement of his brand in a new article in The Economist, stating that he views the attention with "curiosity and serenity." Nevermind the fact that hip hop stars are his biggest customers. He's afraid they could damage the brand's precious blue blood image, and said that rappers can go drink another kind of champagne:

Asked by the Economist about whether associations with rap stars could affect the marque, new managing director Frederic Rouzaud said: "That's a good question, but what can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

Powerful rap mogul Jay-Z has called Rouzaud on his snotty racist remarks and is refusing to drink Cristal or sell it at his 40/40 sports bar.

"It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the 'Hip-Hop' culture as 'unwelcome attention,'" said Jay-Z. "I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life."

The head of Cristal is such an asshole and if he doesn't issue a retraction soon we hope the hip hop community will call an all out boycott on the drink. He's new so maybe the board of directors or the company will fire him for making such a stupid comment. We hope Diddy will speak out next. If those idiots at Cristal don't want all the business and free publicity then they can go back to selling the shit to country clubs and estate parties and see how their exclusive attitude makes sales tank.

Mariah Carey's $1 billion Legs of Godzilla

You probably heard that Mariah Carey insured her overrated legs for a staggering $1 billion. It was news when model Rachel Hunter's legs were insured for $1 million in her heydey. Heidi Klum's legs are currently insured for a relatively realistic $2 million, but she's an international supermodel, not a hedonistic singer who could easily let up on her exercise routine and become a size 14. (This is a woman who doesn't even lift her own drinks, so it's doubtful that she even approaches Janet Jackson's level of fitness commitment.)

Mariah is fronting PETA-hated Gillette's "Legs of a Goddess" Godzilla campaign, and has taken out a $1 billion insurance policy on her legs as a result. Those razors better be smooth, because a little knick could cost the insurance company six figures. If she falls or something, they're bankrupt.

Mariah will be on tour soon, and will probably be dancing and stuff, but $1 billion is way excessive. Britney had to cancel her tour two years ago due to a knee injury, but it's hard to imagine the damage being that high if Mariah is laid up for a while.

Mariah appeared at Radio City Music hall yesterday for a press conference announcing her role as the Gillette spokesperson. She posed with a 16-foot likeness of her own legs after a 20 pound weight loss, making me wonder where the rest of the giant Mariah went. Are those legs attached to a huge evil Mariah monster that's ready to take over Manhattan?

Paris Hilton can't remember the name of her own video game

Paris Hilton made an appearance at video game expo E3 in Los Angeles yesterday to promote her new tween-aimed cellphone game, "Paris Hilton's Jewel Jam."

She arrived a half hour late and called her game "Diamondquest" by mistake:

"Sorry I'm late," the heiress said. "I'm really excited to have my new video game, 'Diamondquest.' Thank you all for coming, and you can download the game," she said.

After Hilton arrived, men in business suits jockeyed for space with reporters and computer geeks as she sat at a table posing for photographers while signing autographs.

Her game, which can be played on a cell phone, will be available this summer. Video game maker Gameloft will produce a series of video games with Hilton.

While she was impeccably coiffed, she may have thought the geeks wouldn't notice that she paired red shoes with a green dress.

A promo display for the game, shown inset, reveals more than intended with a video display peeking out of Paris' crotch.

Paris' latest boyfriend, newly recruited NFL player Matt Leinart, was seen emerging from her house Wednesday morning carrying his clothes from the night before. New love must have Paris so confused that's she's unable to match her clothes or remember important details.

Britney Spears really does look pregnant

Britney Spears attended an Elizabeth Arden event in NY yesterday to celebrate the success of her three perfumes put out by the company.

Britney Spears celebrated the astounding success of her three fragrances, Curious, Fantasy and In Control, with Elizabeth Arden, the company that manufactures and markets the scents, at a celebration today at the Hudson Hotel. Her first fragrance Curious, became the #1 launch worldwide in 2005, and the only new launch to make the top 20 list globally. In the US, Curious achieved a top 5 fragrance ranking among fragrances launched in the past decade. Over 10 million bottles of the three scents have been sold -- an astonishing number considering that her first fragrance, Curious, was just launched in 2004.

A giant cake in shape of her fragrance bottle for Fantasy commemorated the occasion, and young dancers from Broadway Dance Center, where Britney had studied in New York before becoming a top-selling recording artist, helped her celebrate. Dancers competed in a dance-off judged by Britney. Twelve-year-old Marina Micalizzi was the winner.

In the pictures at the event, Britney looks polished and happy. She seems to enjoy the dance contest and gets a kick out of the young dancers. In the pictures published by Wireimage, it's hard to tell if she looks pregnant. There are candids of her leaving the event, though, that show a definite bump.

I've gradually changed my mind about this - Britney really is pregnant!

Britney Spears is selling a special Mother's Day bear through 1-800-Flowers. $5 of the proceeds of each sale will benefit the Britney Spears Foundation.

She has a new song available online.
You can download "Luv the Hurt Away" featuring Full Force from BreatheHeavy.com.

Kate Moss is the new face of Nikon

So Kate Moss doesn't really care about much since her comeback is in full force. She got an over quarter-million dollar contract with Calvin Klein a couple weeks ago, and now she's going to represent Nikon cameras:

Nikon said that it will begin a major ad campaign for its new Coolpix S6 digital camera using supermodel Kate Moss.

Moss will appear in print, TV and cinema ads and on the web at stunningnikon.com to promote the point-and-shoot camera.

She's also rumored to be returning to Burberry after they dropped her during her cocaine scandal last year. Oh and there's a ridiculous new statue of her.

Everything is not roses with Kate. She was overheard complaining about her lack of a sex life. Her ex, Pete Doherty, with whom she is supposedly back together, bragged that he was sober while at a performance in Ireland this weekend, so that could explain it.

Update: Kate was spotted holding hands with Israeli financier Vivi Nevo at a party for model Jeisa Chiminazzo in NY recently.

Here is Kate getting reading for Easter weekend with her daughter, Lila Grace, and her ex, Lila's father Jefferson Hack. There are also two pictures of Kate for Nikon courtesy of yeeeah.

Sienna Miller screws up her big fashion contract

Just like Jessica Simpson, Sienna Miller has been spotted out in the wrong brand of jeans when she's contractually obligated to wear a certain brand:

This week, glossy magazines carried photos of Miller shopping in a pair of jeans from a designer called LoFli.

So far so uncontroversial. But my man in the rag trade points out that la Miller signed an exclusive deal in November to be the "face and body" of Pepe jeans.

"Not only did Sienna do a racy photo-shoot on a beach in Malibu, she also agreed in writing not to wear rival products," I'm told. "Not surprisingly, Pepe now want her to explain what's going on."

Yesterday, the jeans firm's spokesman insisted: "Sienna is contracted only to wear Pepe jeans, so we're sure it must be an old photograph."

Oops. Guess a fashion contract means that you can't even go out of your house wearing clothes that aren't sponsor-approved. It's not as big a sponsor faux pas as Jessica Simpson made, though. According to a new lawsuit against her, she named "True Religion" as her favorite brand of jeans when she was supposed to promote a line named after her creepy father's nickname for her, "Princy."

Here is Miller on the set of "Interview," in which she plays a soap actress who gets interviewed by a "fading political journalist" played by Steve Buscemi. Hillary Duff is shown in the same dress as a host of the 2005 Teen Choice Awards. Via ONTD!.

Mischa Barton's new Bebe ads

Mischa Barton is the new face of Bebe, in ads to be launched soon. One commentor on the bulletin board where we found these scans said she's already seen the pictures on a bus stop.

She's said to be "playing the dominatrix" in these ads by photographer Steven Klein, but they look pretty tame:

The pretty actress will be seen on billboards across America wearing Bebe outfits, posing alongside scantily clad man-servants.

In one quirky photo, taken by top snapper Steven Klein, Barton digs her high-heel stilettos into a male model's bare back, while, in another, a hunk wearing nothing but a pair of bikini briefs kneels obediently beside her as she strikes a fierce pose behind a veil.

Rumor has it that Mischa has been late on set and may be thinking of leaving The O.C. Her bosses have denied that there's a problem, and say they "don't comment on rumor or speculation." That makes it sound true, doesn't it?

Here are some of Barton's Bebe ads, as seen in OK! magazine:

Jessica Simpson forgets who pays her for what

Jessica Simpson is being sued by a clothing company for $100 million for breach of contract:

According to the complaint, filed in New York State Supreme Court by the Tarrant Apparel Group, Simpson inked a multimillion-dollar three-year licensing deal in December 2004 to launch a line of low-priced jeans and clothing.

Under the terms of the agreement, Simpson was supposed to be "actively involved" in promoting the garb, including wearing items from the line at "public events, shows and appearances" whenever "reasonably practicable..."

The company contends the Dukes of Hazzard star even refused to be photographed wearing items from the JS by Jessica Simpson and Princy collections, and that when asked by the press to name her favorite brand of jeans at an event last year, she replied "True Religion," rather than "Princy."

Now Mischa Barton realizes that she has to talk about Keds as part of her endorsement deal, but Jessica Simpson has a clothing line named after her and still can't remember to plug it.

Simpson might just be fed up with endorsements. She sued an autoracing company two years ago for not paying her a mere $140,000 for wearing a T-Shirt with their logo on it in one of her videos.

Here she is in an older photo shoot for "Lovable Bras." At least that's a product she doesn't have to worry about wearing out.

Lachey's body is worth 1/2 million

Nick Lachey shirtless with both hands in the air with the caption what you dont think I'm worth it?
Nick Lachey just got a half million dollar deal to endorse an exercise program on TV. You know you watch that crap when you can't sleep thinking "I could change my life, but there's no way I'm going to pay $39.95." Page Six claims:

The former boybander just scored a cool $500,000 for agreeing to be in an infomercial. According to Us Weekly, Lachey "pumps it up" with Brooke Burke in new ads for celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson's "Core Secret" DVDs. And because he signed the deal after his separation from Simpson, he doesn't have to give her a dime.

Nick is really buff, but 1/2 million for being a spokesperson? This news seems old, considering that A Socialite's Life had screencaps of the infomercial nearly a month ago.

Hillary Swank to sell perfume

Hillary Swank in a suggestive pose on a couch with the caption I'm not just a serious actress, I can get cosmetics contracts too!

Hillary Swank has signed a three-year contract with fragrance house Guerlain, famous for the old-lady scent Shalimar. The company issued a standard statement praising the actress' potential to shill perfume:

In making the announcement Monday, Guerlain described the 31-year-old actress, an Oscar winner for her roles in “Million Dollar Baby” and “Boys Don’t Cry,” as a “radiant and natural beauty” who does not conform to stereotypes.

“Her background of always opting for the more challenging and ‘risky’ roles coupled with her warm and genuine personality, a far cry from the usual Hollywood mold, were all factors that made her an obvious choice for Guerlain,” the luxury French fragrance and beauty company said in a statement...

A spokeswoman for the company declined to comment Monday on the terms of the deal or the details of the fragrance.

Things are looking up for Hillary now that she's back with Chad and has a new gig.
